Ready for my 2 month photography expedition to the Ellesmere Island in the northern part of Canada. Together with my good friend and expedition body Anders Bilgram from #nordiskbrænderi I am going to travel through this amazing high Arctic nature on skies with pulks until the end of May. I'll be out of reception until then so this might be the last post for a while.. I'm looking forward to sharing a series of movies from this expedition on my youtube channel so be sure to subscribe and to hit the little bell. Link is in my biography. Have an awesome spring - see you out there... #grisefiord #nunavut #goingoffgrid #intothewild
4 DAYS SOLO WINTER CAMPING AND WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY 🎥 LINK to the video is in my BIO 🎥 I am off grid in Norway on a 4 day solo adventure to test my expedition equipment for my upcoming 2 month expedition to Ellesmere Island and to do wildlife photography. This time I decide to hike further into the mountains to see if I can find musk oxen in the Snøhetta area. When reaching the foot of the mountain I am surprised by a sudden snow storm and I am forced to pitch my tent in very high winds. I am leaving for this expedition on Sunday and I am looking forward to an amazing adventure together with my expedition buddy Anders Bilgram from @nordiskbraenderi. I hope you will like the video 😃
Stags testing their strength while the falling snowflakes slowly covers the Scottish Highlands. Thanks for a great trip @jocumming.
The fire has gone out when I woke up and the morning dew that covered my sleeping bag has turned into a thin layer of Ice. From my little camp underneath the old oak I could see how the sky was turning from a deep blue into orange. The sound of the many birds filled the air and I felt a wave of happiness washing through me. I got the fire started and watched how the smoke rose vertically up through the branches - not the slightest wind. After breakfast and my morning coffee I got the camera equipment ready and went for a hike around the small Danish peninsula. On the northern coast line I collected some oisters for the dinner and continued back into the forest from where I spotted these beautiful swans in a hyge lake. Spending 3 days in this beautiful wilderness was amazing and I'm already looking forward to going back this summer. Watch my video from this tip - I have put a link in the BIO.
Spending 3 days with my camera on a small peninsula near the West coast of Denmark, camping under open sky and cooking my food on the fire - I know nothing better. I hoped to get a glimpse and maybe a photo of the deer but I didn't get that. Instead I had the pleasure of watching these beautiful swans. Nature is not predictable but I never return home disappointed. My new video from this trip is online on my YouTube channel - I have put a link in my BIO.
It begins to brighten outside. It happens so slowly that, at first, I don't notice it. The trees and the Junipers gradually emerge in the landscape, becoming dark silhouettes. Everything stands still in grayscale. I tighten the down jacket around my neck and move my toes in my boots. It is only minus 10 degrees celsius, but it's too cold to sit still. There are a few more long hours to wait, with no chance of stretching my legs. I pour some coffee in the mug, slowly and silently I shift position, and continue waiting. I'm telling the story behind this photo in a new video on my YouTube channel. Link to the video is in my BIO. This text is an excerpt from my book Silence of the North which can be purchased on my website https://mortenhilmer.com/en/
As the snow slowly covers the Scottish landscape the red deer are grassing peacefully on the hillside just outside the forest. The two stags are very aware of each other and every so often they are having something that looks most of all like a play. They put their antlers together, pushing each other without actually having a real fight.
The little mountain hare was so hard to see when it was sitting still in its form but now where it is running in the back light with the golden snow as the background it is suddenly so obvious. So fast and still without the slightest sound it quickly moves from one group of vegetation to another.
Scottish mountain hares are well insulated by a thick fluffy fur. Beside its amazing insulation it provides a great camouflage in the winter landscape. Sitting close to these small mammals observing their behavior while the wind and the low sun cooperate to decorate the Scottish Highlands with a gently spray of golden powder is simply amazing. - - - #wildlifephotography #nikonnordic #nikonmirrorless #scottishwildlifephotos #scottishwildlifetrust #scottishwildlife #cairngorms #cairngormsnationalpark #highlands #highlandsofscotland #mountainhare #ilcp photographers #youtuber #backlightphotography #earthcapture #earth deluxe
The low winter sun is just about to set behind the mountains in the West and the golden light turns the blowing snow into golden dust. This moment doesn't have to be captured on a camera to stay clear in my memory... My video from tris trip is online - LINK IN BIO
Spending almost a week in the mountains makes it easier for me to focus and to be present. Being in nature does good to my mind. In the beginning my thoughts tend to flicker between the future and the past, expectations and things back home. Then after some time it is settling down and I feel how the moment - right now - fills up more and more. I then feel present. Sometimes it reaches another level and everything around me disappears - everything except from me and the animal I am photographing. I think most nature photographers have experienced this amazing feeling. Watch my new video The Art of Being Present. Link is in BIO.
WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY - The Art Of Being Present. New video from a fantastic time in the Scottish Highlands spent with these amazing small fellows. The beauty of the Scottish Highlands is breathtaking and these enormous, far-reaching mountains are the home of the little furry mountain hare. Only a small hole in the snow reveals the entrance to the hidden form - their little "house" . Feasting on the low vegetation these mammals have plenty of food year arround. A video from this trip will be online on my channel one of these days..
The magpie is among the most intelligent birds we have in Denmark. Together with crows and ravens they are know for being able to count and to use simple tools for achieving their goals and - whish is very often food related. As I am watching this beautiful magpie walking around looking for food, I can sence this intelligence on the way it observed the surroundings. It is definitely aware of my presence and I am grateful that it chooses to stay.
As I am watching the beautiful majestic bird of prey sitting on the ground, suddenly the characteristic mysterious sound of a buzzard fills the air. I'm can't see anything because I'm inside the blind but surely the buzzard on the ground can. It follows the other bird until it once again dissappears behind the low hills in the South. The sun is now getting close to the horizon and the landscape is changing character as the light gets warmer. Outside my small photo blind the buzzard is sitting, gazing towards the forest. There is something calming about mornings and evenings. The light is fading outside my small photo blind but I still have a few hours before it is getting too dark to photograph. Two Buzzards have landed and some crows and magpies. To some it might sounds boring to spend a day in a small wooden box waiting but for these who have tried it will know how peaceful and relaxing it can be. Observing these birds without disturbing gives the opportunity to actually learn about their interesting behaviour. The combination of falling snowflakes and the huge spruce trees is spectacular. I don't know if it is the sharp contrast between the green and the white or the tiny small flakes in comparison to the huge, old giants. But it is beautiful. When holding my breath and listening I could hear a repetition of high thin notes - goldcrests. These old trees are the home for so many small birds and other animals.
